Reflections of an Ordinary Mystic – Part 2

A friend of mine recently gifted me a notebook inscribed with the Gandhi quote: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” My friend knows I like this quote because it’s the signature on my personal email.

His gift reminded me of the importance of this quote. When you want to see a positive change around you, the best place to begin is with you! For example, if the trash on the sidewalk bothers you, don’t just complain about it. Simply pick it up and put it in the garbage can! When I used to run a daycare, and was on outings with the kids, I was struck by how much litter there was on the playground we frequented. I thought to myself: “This isn’t fair to the kids!” and “We need to take care of our public spaces.” “Let it begin with us!” So I made a point of carrying gloves on these trips. When the opportunity struck, we all put on gloves, and with my careful supervision, picked up the litter and disposed of it.

When you take responsibility for what is important to you, you give others permission to take action to make little improvements around themselves too.

Let it begin with you. You can begin in small, but significant ways, such as acknowledging strangers. I did this the other day when I pulled up in the parking lot of a pet store to get my dog his favourite treats. I noticed a person working hard on the boulevard picking up trash. I made a point of smiling their way, and they smiled back. Something so simple as smiling at others can make their day! If we could spread a little joy each day, it would lift up so many people.

Change makers are just ordinary people looking for the good in each day; for the heart and soul around us.

From time to time we all get complacent in our lives. For example, when was the last time you arrived home from work and couldn’t remember anything about your day? After all, our work, or daily routine can sometimes be dull and repetitive, right?

I’m inviting you to shake it up, and try something different.

Maybe you want to see more interaction between your coworkers. Why not bring in snacks for coffee break? Perhaps try striking up a conversation with someone whom you rarely if never interact with…maybe someone who you find challenging? Chances are, they’re a mirror for your insecurities.

I believe that we heal deeply when we lead by example.

It’s easy to criticize what others aren’t doing, or what we want to see happen, and then do nothing about it. When you lead by example, you inspire others to show more positive behaviours like kindness, compassion, and grace. It’s through these behaviours that our spirits are elevated and we find creative solutions to everyday problems.

We all have our gifts, our part to play in life. No part is better than the other.

It is through humble service work that we can reach out and remove ourselves and others from isolation.

When we reach out, we heal one another’s spirits. We see God in one another. Let your gift shine by sharing it with others. It just might inspire others to do the same.

In the words of the late Cultural Anthropologist Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world, indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

With Gratitude,
