Welcome to the first blog of “Reflections of an Ordinary Mystic.” I chose the pen name “Ordinary Mystic” because…
I feel that I’m just an ordinary person who enjoys learning about mysteries that transcend human knowledge.
Since I was a child, I have always been keenly aware of universal synchronicities, or as Monica Berg puts it: “a collision of events where something other than the probability of chance is involved and this confluence feels meaningful.” It’s like when you’re thinking about accomplishing a particular goal, and everything you need to do so, just falls in your lap. Or, when your inner voice tells you to take a different route to the dentist, and you’re glad you did because you missed a fatal collision on your usual route.
Another synchronicity is observing repeating numbers on a clock. The usual sequence of numbers that presents itself to me is 11:11. This means that my angels have my back – that everything is on schedule and divinely guided.
I’m sitting here writing this during the afternoon of the Full Moon in Leo. Leo is all about tapping into our hearts and fully embracing our creativity. For me, writing has always held a special place in my heart. A blank page to me is like a canvas to the visual artist.
I feel that any page is a special place, waiting to be filled with meaningful words, thoughts, feelings, intentions…with heart. So I’m sharing a little bit of my heart with you.
But I digress! You may be wondering “why ordinary?” Ordinary is defined as a day-to-day thing, something usual, or standard. That seems to contradict the idea of a mystic. A mystic, is stereotypically, a hippie with their head in the clouds, who meditates all day, and is uninterested in daily chores, paying bills, mundane conversation, and a 9 to 5 existence. The stereotypical mystic wants to search for the meaning of the universe in a far off place. In doing so, they’re not so interested in applying this knowledge in a practical way. There’s almost a division between “us” mystics vs “them” people who are “asleep” or unenlightened.
I’m interested in breaking down these barriers and bringing a little bit of mysticism into the realm of the ordinary, and boring day! Actually the realm of the boring is exactly where we find enlightenment.
Doing everyday tasks can be a little less painful and meaningless when we bring into them an attitude of gratitude, and a sense of mindfulness. What do I mean? I’ll give you an example of eating. Eating has been incredibly complicated by our society because it has been burdened by distraction. It’s not just you and your sandwich. It’s the traffic light, gas pedal, shoulder check, change lanes, and bite. Or it’s type, type, type, and bite. Or it’s check your instagram stories, and bite! It should just be, observe your sandwich, take a small bite, chew slowly, swallow, and repeat! If you have Reiki Level I, you can also Reiki your food before eating it, while saying a prayer of thanks for all those who made it possible to eat your sacred sandwich.
Nine months ago I began learning the Akashic Records. It has been a very mystical experience.
For those of you who are new to the Akashic Records, they are an energetic record of every living thing on the planet, in this life, present, past, and future lives. So everything you’ve thought, said, and done, is registered in the records. When we think of something as being on record, we often think it has a past date. Following this logic, we can’t know what will happen in the future, because it isn’t written yet. But the Akashic Records doesn’t understand time in a linear fashion, or as constrained by the clock, or written word. One can liken the Records to a fountain, where the past, present and future all converge together in a cascade of water. The records work in this way because they are guided by divine wisdom, which knows no past, present or future. Life just “spills out” all at once. I have found the Akashic Records to be a very practical tool to help me understand my past, and to guide me on a daily basis.
I encourage you to find the mystical in the everyday by developing an attitude of curiosity and gratitude for what is right in front of you. You can make the mundane mystical with just a little bit of creativity. Enjoy!
